Designers Speak Up

Present Tense : Wahine Toi Aotearoa – To record the current landscape of women in design and give visibility to the unsung diversity of Aotearoa design.

Designers Speak (Up) made an open call to all femxle creatives to design a poster using the medium to explore and address an issue of their choice. The ladies from Insight Creative took up the call!

Title: It’s by design

“Whilst businesses globally have taken one step forward and one step back on women in leadership, New Zealand has taken two firm steps back. Globally 75% of businesses now have at least one woman on their senior management teams. In New Zealand, the results are more dire, hitting an all-time low of 18% since the report began in 2004.” – Grant Thornton International Women in Business report

What a sad picture these statistics paint. Here we can see the binary split of genders forming a symbol of power. It represents those in positions of power within Aotearoa New Zealand, but it also suggests we can choose to turn it on or to turn it off. Everyone has a say in what happens going forward.

As they say – everything is either created by accident or by design. This, unfortunately, is by design. Perhaps design can help rectify it.

Completed at Insight Creative with Josephine Glover and Alice McKeown.
